Why Big Fr and Hungry F

Create a Post on your Blog entitled "Why Big Fr and Hungry F", which explains these things in a numbered list:
  1. Why Francium is the biggest element with the lowest IE and EN
  2. Why Helium is the smallest element with the highest IE
  3. Why Noble Gases don't have EN values
  4. Why Fluorine has the highest EN
Answers:

1. Francium is the biggest element with the lowest IE and EN because it has 7 shells (row 7 on the periodic table) and it has the smallest number of electrons in its row. It is the biggest because its ionization energy is low and it's so big it is not good at attracting electrons.
2. Helium is the smallest element with the highest IE because helium has the least number of shells possible and within the first row there are only two elements, hydrogen and helium. Helium is going to pull its shells closer because it is smaller than hydrogen. It has high ionization energy because it is the smallest and heaviest and it takes the most energy to remove an electron.
3. Noble gases don't have EN values because they have full valence shells. They have full shells, so they do not need to gain or lose electrons.
4. Fluorine has the highest EN because it is only one electron from having a full valence shell.  and has the highest attraction to electrons. The smaller the element, the higher attraction it has.

Chlorine is Element number 17

1) My name in other languages:
French: Chlore
Italian: Cloro
Swedish: Klor

1)I got my name from the Greek word "chloros" which means "pale green".

2) As a pure element my color is a pale, murky green.

3) The nucleus of my most common isotope contains 17 protons and 18 neutrons. My naturally occuring isotopes are 35Cl, with a natural abundance of 78.78% and 37Cl, with a natural abundance of 24.22%.
My average atomic mass is 35.453 amu.

4) There are 17 electrons in a neutral atom of my element. I have 17 shells of electrons.

5) My atomic radius in meters is .0000000001891 m

6) In pure elemental form, my properties are melting point: -101.5 °C, boiling point: -34.04 °C, liquid range: 67.51 K, and critical temperature: 144 °C.

7) My abundance in Natalie's body is 52.8456 grams. In the Earth's crust, my abundance is 170000 ppb (weight) and in our Universe, 1000 ppb.

8) The compounds I form are Fluorides and Oxides. Some of these compounds include Chlorine fluoride and Chlorine dioxide.

9) Carl Wilhelm Scheele discovered me in 1774. I was discovered in Sweden through the reaction of the mineral pyrolusite (manganese dioxide, MnO2) with hydrochloric acid (HCl, then known as muriatic acid). Scheele mistakenly thought the gas resulting contained oxygen.

10) In human society, I have many uses including: being used in in the production of safe drinking water, the extraction of bromine, and in the manufacturing of chlorinated cleaning compounds.

11) Chlorine itself is not flammable, but it can react explosively or form explosive compounds with other chemicals such as turpentine and ammonia.

welcome =)

Hi...welcome to my blog. I don't particularly like science in general but chemistry isn't that bad so far. Hope you enjoy my blog...

I love life (most times) and my family and friends. I also love green beans and corn and the color purple especially.

What do i dream to accomplish? hmm.... i'd like to graduate from high school! and hopefully go to cal or stanford (fat chance). then i'd like to be the next katie couric =) aka news reporter because i like to talk.

okay, that's all. thanks for reading =)
